EZDetach Frequently Asked Questions

Outlook is blocking EZDetach links with "Outlook blocked access to the following potentially unsafe attachments"
On July 13th 2010, Microsoft released an Outlook update that started blocking links created by EZDetach. Please see the following knowledge base article for additional details and potential workarounds.

Installation and Compatibility

What operating systems are supported?
EZDetach for Outlook runs on Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 with the latest Service Pack.

What versions of Outlook are supported?
EZDetach for Outlook works with Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2007 (with latest Service Packs). EZDetach does NOT work with Outlook Express.

I don't see any new buttons on the Outlook toolbar after installing EZDetach. Why?
Restart Outlook. Make sure you shutdown Outlook completely during the restart. (Use the task manager to verify that Outlook is not running).

EZDetach Outlook toolbar button is usually located on the far right of the toolbar. Sometimes the Outlook window is not wide enough to show all icons. Try maximizing the Outlook window, or click on the little right arrow to the right of the toolbar.

In Outlook 2007, if the above does not help, please open "Tools->Trust Center->Addins". If "Apply macro security settings to installed add-ins" is checked, uncheck it and restart Outlook.

EZDetach has disappeared from my outlook. How do I get it back?
Please check the following location:
Outlook 2007:Help -> About Microsoft Outlook -> Disabled Items
Outlook 2003 or earlier: Help -> About Microsoft Outlook -> Disabled Items
If you see EZDetach on that list, select it and click Enable. Then restart Outlook.

In Outlook 2007, if the above does not help, please open "Tools->Trust Center->Addins". If "Apply macro security settings to installed add-ins" is checked, uncheck it and restart Outlook.

I am a licensed user. How do I get updates?
You can download the latest update for which you are eligible from this page.

Outlook displays DLL errors about EZDetach
Are you seeing any of the following error messages
"The add-in "c:\Program Files\TechHit.com\EZDetach\EZDetach.dll" could not be installed or loaded. This problem may be resolved by using Detect and Repair on the Help Menu."
or
The Add-in "EZDetach" (c:\Program Files\TechHit.com\EZDetach\EZDetach.dll) cannot be loaded and has been disabled by Outlook. Please contact the Add-in manufacturer for an updated. If no update is available, please uninstall the Add-in. Out of memory or system resources. Close some window or programs and try again.?

This is a very misleading message. Do not run Detect and Repair. Please download the latest version, it has a workaround for this Outlook issue.

Functionality

I have ezdetached a number of attachments, but my pst size has not decreased. Why?
To make your PST files smaller, you have to compact them.

I checked the "Append 'From' Email" checkbox, but sender email is not appended to filenames. Why?
If you are using a Microsoft Exchange server and you receive an email from somebody on the same Exchange server, his/her email will not be appended to the file name. This behavior is by design.

The "Reattach Links" command doesn't seem to be working for me.
Some 3rd party add-ins are known to interfere with Outlook operation. See this page for the list of offending add-ins.

How do I reattach links in all messages in a given folder and its subfolders?
The "Reattach links" command operates on the messages you highlight in the main Outlook window. To reattach all links in a folder and all subfolders:

  • Create a Search Folder that would display all messages in which you would like to reattach links
  • Select all messages in that Search Folder
  • Invoke Tools->EZDetach->Reattach Links menu command

Note: You can use the same Search Folder trick to invoke the "Batch Update Links" command on all messages in a given folder tree.

Can EZDetach copy destination folder path to the clipboard after saving attachments?
Yes, it can. In fact, this can be a quick timesaver for cases when you need to notify your coworkers about saved attachments. To enable this option, create the following registry value and set it to 1 (DWORD). Note that this option is also available via EZDetach centralized admin facilities.
Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TechHit.com\EZDetach\Options
Value: CDPC (DWORD)

Can I use environment variables in the destination folder path?
When you use EZDetach centralized administration facilities to configure end-user workstations, in some cases it is useful to define destination folder locations specific to each user. In this case, you can use environment variables, such as %USERPROFILE%, in the value "Default directory for saving attachments".

Will attachment links be accessible via OWA or on my phone?
Attachment links use local path to reference the detached files. Local paths are not accessible when you access your email remotely via OWA or on a phone.

I created a rule with EZDetach custom action, but it doesn't work. Why?
There are several potential causes for the problem:

My version of Outlook 97 does not have Rules Wizard. Why?
Rules Wizard is not bundled with Outlook 97. Microsoft provides it as a separate download.
